“¿Este qué viento es?” — What wind is this?
It’s one of the most common questions in Cádiz — locals know their winds as sommeliers know wine, and they talk about them just as passionately.

It’s a constant topic: curses hurled at el Levante, sighs of relief and gracias a Dios when el Poniente rolls in. Around here, the wind isn’t just weather — it’s a personality, a mood, a convenient excuse, and a constant companion. Plus, since gaditanos are famously chatty, “¿Qué viento sopla?” (Which wind is blowing?) is always a safe conversation starter.

Perched between the Atlantic and the Strait of Gibraltar, Cádiz is a meteorological crossroads where air masses stage daily drama. Eastern gales, western rescues, northern chills, southern hazes — it’s like living in a soap opera written by Mother Nature.

Here, wind is so common that unlike other places where gusts are an event, it’s the absence of wind that feels strange. Locals notice immediately.

Levante – The Drama Queen

Its name comes from the east (levantar — “where the sun rises”). Levante is like any other local in Cádiz: ever-present, dramatic, and sometimes unwelcome… unless you’re doing laundry, in which case it’s your best friend.

Direction: From the east.
Vibe: Hot, dry, relentless — and a little unhinged.

Signature moves:

Pushes temps into oven mode — often jumping fto 33º – 35ºC.

Creates a hazy sky by blowing in African desert dust.

Turns your beach umbrella into a kite.

Drains your energy, skin, plants, and jamón of moisture.

Brings more mosquitos — locals swear if there are extra bugs one night, Levante will arrive the next day.

When: Mostly May–August, but it can appear anytime. Long spells (levanteras) can last a week or more. Cádiz gets Levante about 165 days a year, usually with heat. Gusts can top 100 km/h.

Fun fact: Levante sculpted Punta Paloma’s giant dune (Spain’s largest) and helps shape bird migration between Europe and Africa.

Poniente – The Chill One

Its name comes from the west (poner el sol — “where the sun sets”). Poniente is Cádiz’s favorite child in summer — a fresh, cooling relief from Levante’s assault. In winter, though, it can be chilly, though rarely as biting as the north wind.

Direction: From the west, straight off the Atlantic.
Vibe: Cool, humid, refreshing — Cádiz’s collective exhale.

Signature moves:

Drops temperatures instantly.

Clears skies and restores breathable air.

Brings moisture, sometimes fog, and in summer, a blessed break from Levante.

After several days of Poniente, sea currents bring algae — along with iodine-rich water, said to be good for your health.

When: Common in spring and autumn, but can happen year-round.
Warning: When paired with Atlantic storms in autumn/winter, Poniente can roar at over 100 km/h, sending waves over the sea walls.

Viento del Norte – The Sneaky One

From the Iberian interior, this north wind is dry, crisp, and cuts deep in winter. It’s the one that makes Cádiz feel truly cold (which isn’t often). When it blows, then you can say it’s winter here.

Viento del Sur – The Wild Card

From the south — often Africa — it brings warmth, humidity, and sometimes calima: a hazy Saharan dust that makes sunsets cinematic and allergies memorable.

Gaditanos generally appreciate the southern wind. It doesn’t always bring rain, but if rain is coming, odds are the south wind is leading the way.

The Lesser-Known Compass Points of Cádiz

While Levante and Poniente steal most of the spotlight, they’re not the only winds shaping life here. Some of these “supporting characters” actually have more influence than we give them credit for:

Noroeste (NW) — A mash-up of north and west winds. Brings cooler, drier air and calmer seas.

Noreste (NE) — From the north and east. Crisp, clear, and often a sign of stable weather.

Sureste (SE) — South meets east. Warmer, humid, and a little more unpredictable.

Suroeste (SW) — South and west combine to form the true prevailing wind here, even if Levante and Poniente hog the fame.

Wind Culture in Cádiz

Sayings:

“El Levante vuelve a la gente loca.” (The Levante drives people mad.)

“¡Qué levantazo!” (That’s quite a gust!)

“¡Menuda ventolera!” (What a strong wind!)

“Si en Cádiz no hay viento, es que no estás en Cádiz.” (If there’s no wind in Cádiz, you’re not in Cádiz.)

“En Cádiz no hace frío, hace humedad.” (In Cádiz, it’s not the cold that gets you—it’s the humidity, a typical saying about the Poniente wind.)

Architecture:
Courtyards, high walls, and specially designed shutters reflect centuries of building with the wind in mind. Check out our blog on La Persiana: The Window Blind and Its Cultural Legacy in Spain

Daily life:
Locals “read the sky” before planning a beach day, hike, or dinner outing, adjusting their plans around the winds.

Economy:
The winds shape trade, fishing, tourism, renewable energy, and farming—making Cádiz a place where air currents literally influence livelihoods. Cádiz has become a hotspot for kite surfing, windsurfing, and sailing, with wind-related tourism now a major contributor to the local economy.

In agriculture, the winds play a surprisingly important role, especially in the vineyards around Jerez. The Levante and Poniente help control humidity and prevent fungal diseases in the Palomino grape, which is used to produce world-famous sherry. The dry Levante winds keep vineyards ventilated, while the humid Poniente adds the right touch of moisture, creating the unique conditions that give Cádiz sherry its distinctive flavor.

Renewable energy is another wind-driven industry: local wind farms generate electricity, provide jobs, and contribute to Spain’s renewable energy goals. Today Cadiz is home to 10 wind farms which help to generate power for the local towns.

The Wind & the Birds

Playing in the wind

souring through the sky

Cádiz is one of Europe’s key raptor migration points. Each year, thousands of birds use warm air currents to cross the narrow Strait of Gibraltar toward Africa. For instance, a vulture will ride a thermal from land, climb as high as possible, then glide across the water, catching another rising current on the other side.

Strong Levante winds, however, can ground even the most seasoned travelers. In July and August, it’s common to see thousands of Red Kites (Milanos Real) near Tarifa, patiently waiting for the wind to ease. Flying against a fierce Levante is risky—they can get blown far off course into the open ocean. Poniente winds, or a gentle Levante, offer the perfect conditions for these birds to make their epic journey safely.

History Written in the Wind

For over 3,000 years, Cádiz’s winds have been more than just background weather — they’ve been the city’s business partners. The Phoenicians first sailed here around 1100 BCE, drawn by the estuaries and salt flats. The Levante’s dry, hot breath was perfect for evaporating seawater into mountains of salt, a precious preservative for fish and meat. The Romans followed, supercharging the salt trade and building an empire-wide export network for garum, the fermented fish sauce that fueled their cuisine.

Without the Levante’s help, the salt wouldn’t dry as quickly, the fish wouldn’t keep as well, and Cádiz might have been just another fishing village. But here, the wind made industry — from the ancient salt pans to the grapevines inland, where that same dry air helps ripen Palomino grapes for sherry. Even in battle, the winds played a decisive role: during the 1805 Battle of Trafalgar, weak breezes left the French and Spanish fleets becalmed, sealing their fate while the British took advantage of favorable winds. In Cádiz, history is quite literally written in the wind. The wind isn’t just part of Cádiz’s weather; it’s part of its DNA.

Final Gust

Whether it’s whipping sand across your towel or hurling waves over the promenade, Cádiz’s winds are more than background noise — they are its pulse.

Next time you visit, stop for a second and feel it. If it’s Levante, mutter along with the locals: “Otra vez el Levante…” If it’s Poniente, breathe in that cool Atlantic air and smile.

Because here, the wind doesn’t just blow — it speaks. And it always has the last word. If you want to check the weather before you come to visit out fabulous province you can check it here at amet.es.

What Is a Chiringuito?

If you’ve spent time on the Spanish coast, you’ve likely stumbled upon a chiringuito—those toes-in-the-sand beach bars serving cold drinks, fresh seafood, and summer vibes.

But did you know the term chiringuito doesn’t actually come from Spain?

It originated in Cuba. Chiringuito is the diminutive of chiringo, a type of coffee made by pouring boiling water through a sock-like filter. Spanish emigrants brought the word home—or, some say, journalist César González Ruano popularized it after naming a beach bar in Sitges. Either way, the name stuck, and now chiringuito is the go-to word for beach bars across Spain.

In short: “Chiringuito” isn’t originally a Spanish word—it has Cuban roots tied to a style of coffee that evolved into a term for beachfront bars. Wild, right?

A Bit of Backstory

Chiringuitos began appearing along Spanish beaches in the mid-20th century as simple wooden shacks serving cold drinks and snacks to sun-soaked beachgoers. In the 1960s and ’70s, Spain opened its doors to tourism, sparking a boom that dotted the coastlines with these beloved beach bars. By the ’80s and ’90s, chiringuitos exploded in popularity, evolving from humble shacks into stylish, full-service venues that are now an essential part of the Spanish summer experience.

Types of Chiringuitos

There’s a chiringuito for every type of beachgoer:

Old-School Rustic: Plastic chairs, fried fish (pescaito frito), cheap beer, and local character.

Trendy & Chic: Think Instagrammable cocktails, white umbrellas, and DJs.

Family-Friendly: High chairs, shaded seating, and simple menus for little ones.

Gastro Beach Bars: Modern Andalusian cuisine served right on the sand.

The Summer Scene in Cádiz

Summer in Cádiz hits differently when you’re lounging at a chiringuito. But here’s the deal:
During high season (July and August), it can be tough to snag a table. Many spots don’t take reservations, so as soon as you get to the beach, put your name down to avoid long waits.

Also, keep your ears open—sunset DJs and live bands are a chiringuito staple in the afternoons. Whether it’s a chill acoustic set or a full-blown beach party, there’s usually something happening as the sun goes down.

My Favorite Chiringuitos in Cádiz

Besides the local favorites in El Puerto de Santa María and Rota, here are my top picks for must-visit chiringuitos in the province of Cádiz:

Nahu Beach (Playa de la Victoria, Cádiz) – Trendy beach club with cocktails and younger vibes.

Faro Beach (Playa del Faro, Chiclana) – Laid-back with killer sunset views, and great djsets.

El Tumbao (Playa de Valdevaqueros, Tarifa) – Surf-town energy, chill beats, and mojitos on repeat.

Sajorami Beach (Playa de Zahora) – Rustic elegance with great food and dreamy views.

Awa Beach Club (Playa de la Regla, Chipiona) – Chic loungers, delicious drinks, and relaxed atmosphere.

Final Tips

Go early or plan ahead—chiringuitos fill up fast in the summer months.

Bring cash—some spots still don’t take cards.

Stick around for golden hour—there’s no better way to end the day than with music, a drink, and sand between your toes.

If you’re looking to focus on Spain for your next book club theme, look no further! Spain is a country rich in history, culture, and captivating stories that have shaped its identity over centuries. From ancient civilizations to modern transformations, Spain’s journey is filled with triumph, turmoil, and remarkable resilience. Whether you’re eager to explore its dynamic past, understand its complex culture, or immerse yourself in the beauty of its landscapes, books provide the perfect window into the heart of Spain.

To help you dive deeper into Spain’s fascinating history, culture, wars, and travel, I’ve put together a list of 5 essential books that offer a well-rounded perspective. These selections blend historical insights, cultural exploration, personal accounts, and travel writing, giving you a comprehensive understanding of this extraordinary country (basically a little bit of everything).

And while I’m not including it in this list, one book that every reader interested in Spain should tackle is Don Quijote by Miguel de Cervantes. Widely regarded as the first modern novel and the most translated book in history, it’s a timeless classic and a must-read for anyone exploring Spain’s literary heritage. While its 1,072 pages might seem daunting, trust me, it’s a journey worth taking.

If you’re looking for a light to medium-level hike in the stunning Grazalema National Park, this family-friendly trail is the perfect way to spend a day exploring the natural beauty of Cádiz.

How It All Began

Funny enough what started as a casual mindless scroll through Instagram one evening, turned into an unforgettable adventure. While browsing, I stumbled upon a reel from @yocomoporti, showcasing a combination of hiking and dining in Grazalema. The breathtaking views and the charming restaurant they visited caught my attention (the restaurant looked tasty). As luck would have it, my partner in crime (aka hubby) Julian, had also mentioned how we hadn’t been on a good hike in a while.

And wallah a Saturday plan was set!

The Hike in Grazalema National Park

The hike begins just outside the town of Grazalema, with a parking lot conveniently located at the trailhead near Camping Tajo Rodillo. This area offers several different routes, but we opted for a lovely loop (see the picture below).

The loop takes about 3 hours to complete, with a couple of photo stops and a snack break along the way. The trail stretches for 10.46km (roughly 6.5 miles) and is perfect for families with kids. We did this hike a second time with a 10-year-old, and it took us a little longer—around 4 hours—

To be fair this time did include a picnic stop and several smaller stops to do some 10 year old activities such as, throw rocks at rocks, poke rocks with sticks, and climb rocks then jump off said rocks… you know the important stuff.

The hike starts with a steep climb under two peaks before leveling off in a valley with short shrubs. Keep an eye out for livestock; there’s a gate at the start of the trail that must be closed behind you. After reaching the first climb, take the fork to the right, and you’ll soon encounter an old well (and possibly some goats!).

From there, a steady incline takes you to the highest point of the hike, with panoramic views of the Grazalema Natural Park. Keep your eyes peeled, as you might spot some local wildlife, such as Eurasian Griffon Vultures, a Bonelli’s Eagle, or even some lizards and butterflies. You’ll definitely encounter local goats along the way, too!

Keep in mind that towards the end of the incline you will find another gate. (Again, dont forget to close it behind you).

Up there you will find a field of sun bleached lime stone rocks and beautiful views. The views in front of you will be the rolling hills of of the Parque Natural Sierra de Grazalema, or The Natural Park of the Sierra of Grazalema and If you look behind you, you will see views as far as Ronda.

There is also a really cool rock path, it’s tradition that hikers add a rock to it as they pass by.

Don’t forget to add your own rock!

You can also find a couple of rock shelters that are used by Shepard in bad weather. (great for the gram or a picnic)

Stay to the right of the path and as you exit the rock field you will start a steep descent. It will eventually bring you down towards the pine trees and pop you out where the road A-374.

At this parking lot you will find a small gravel footpath that runs down parallel to the road. This path is about 30 min and will take you right to the parking lot you parked at.

Along it you will see an oddly large picnic table and a pretty little creek with possible frogs and if you look hard enough you can find a nature rock arch.

Insider Tips:

Nestled in the heart of Andalucia, Cádiz is a charming coastal city that beckons travelers with its captivating beauty, rich history, and relaxed atmosphere. As a proud local, I’m excited to share why this timeless gem deserves a spot on your travel itinerary. Whether you’re here for the sun, history, or food, Cádiz has something for everyone.

Join us on a virtual tour and discover why Cádiz—often dubbed the “underrated corner of Spain” by the New York Times—is a must-visit destination in Southern Spain.

5 Reasons to Visit Cádiz

Final Thoughts

1. Enjoyable Climate Year-Round

Yes, yes, southern Spain has great weather. BUT unlike other popular cities, people enjoy visiting, Cádiz has an average temperature of 13C in the winter to 25C in the summer and boasts 300 days of sunshine with 7 full hours of daylight in the winter to 14 hours in the summer.

What does this mean? While other Cities in Andalucia can get cold in the winter and blisteringly hot in the summer, Cádiz has a pretty mild temperature all year around and no matter how cold it is in the morning as soon as that sun hits the sky it is the perfect temperature to explore and enjoy the city.

If you are also interested in a little ocean action then you’re in luck because the water temperature is between 16C in the winter to 23C degrees which means one can swim and sunbathe from May to October (and really, even into December). Surfing and scuba diving are possible all year round with a (wetsuit recommended -unless you are a masochist, a Brit, or German ;)).

2. Stunning Architecture

Cádiz is a unique Andalusian city. The French Poet and traveler Antoine de Latour described it in his 1858 play, La Baie de Cadix or ‘The beautiful Cádiz’,

“…(Cádiz) is a ship made of stone, anchored in the middle of the ocean… “

Antoine de Latour

This beautiful city, considered the oldest inhabited settlement in Spain, boasts architecture that dates back to its golden age in the 18th century. The city’s character was shaped by its role as a major trade hub between Spain and the Americas, resulting in a blend of Baroque, Neoclassical, and Elizabethan styles throughout the Old Town.

As you wander through Cádiz’s narrow, winding streets, you’ll encounter magnificent palatial homes and colorful buildings that tell the story of the city’s wealth and elegance. This combination of old and new has organically grown into long windy streets, beckoning one to wander and discover their charm and history.

Fun Fact: Havana, Cuba, was originally modeled after Cádiz, so visiting this Andalusian city offers a taste of what the Cuban capital was once meant to resemble.

3. A Walkable & Bike-Friendly City

One of the best ways to experience Cádiz is on foot. The city’s intimate courtyards, picturesque plazas, and narrow streets are perfect for leisurely strolls. Take in the views of the Atlantic Ocean, enjoy a coffee at one of the charming cafes, or explore the beautiful parks and gardens.

Cádiz is also incredibly bike-friendly. A network of bike paths encircles both the Old and New Towns, making it easy to explore in just a couple of hours. If you’re interested in a guided experience, consider joining one of our bike tours to discover the city’s best spots while staying active.

TCádiz is a food lover’s paradise, especially for seafood enthusiasts. The region is known for its “pescaito frito” (fried fish), but the culinary offerings extend far beyond this classic dish. As a historic port city, Cádiz’s food is a blend of local ingredients and influences from its long history of trade with the Americas.

In addition to local bars, Cádiz boasts several Michelin-starred restaurants, each offering their unique take on Andalusian cuisine.

Did you know there’s an artistic scavenger hunt in Rota? Villa de Rota, a picturesque town in Andalusia, is famous for its stunning beaches, historic charm, and the American military base nearby. But there’s more to this town than meets the eye—hidden within its streets is a unique artistic experience created by a mysterious group known as Los Intervenciones.

This scavenger hunt is not just about finding art; it’s a journey that invites locals and visitors alike to explore Rota’s history and culture through creative installations scattered around the town.

Art Installations in Rota’s Scavenger Hunt

Here’s a look at the art installations created by Los Intervenciones, each with its own fascinating story:

1. Flecha de Hércules (Hercules’ Arrow)

This art piece references the myth of Hercules and the ancient Bay of Cádiz. According to legend, Hercules was instructed by the Oracle to launch arrows in the most beautiful places in the world. The plaque next to the arrow reads:

“La flecha de Hércules”: cuando Hércules separó las columnas y se juntaron los mares del Oráculo ordenó lanzar una saeta que señalaría el lugar donde morarían las futuras civilizaciones.

“When Hercules separated the columns and the seas met the Oracle ordered he launch an arrow that would mark the place where future civilizations would dwell.”

-Anonimo

2. S.O.S

A group of local schoolchildren contributed to this installation, which features five “S.O.S.” symbols etched into the Rota Lighthouse. The art serves as a reminder that the world’s most developed continents are not the only ones that deserve attention.

This artwork is inspired by the Great Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Myth: The Great Lighthouse of Alexandria was erected between 300 and 282 BC by the king (Ptolemy I Soter) who succeeded Alexander the Great. This gigantic building became the tallest lighthouse in the area and was dedicated to the Saviour Gods (Zeus), on behalf of those who sail the seas. It was meant to help guide sailors into the island of Pharos at night as it seems the water was very treacherous and many ships would wreck in the attempt.

3. Barca de Piedras (Boat of Rocks)

Located at the foot of the lighthouse, this installation symbolizes the lives lost at sea, particularly those of migrants crossing dangerous waters in search of a better life. The rocks inside the boat represent the heavy burdens carried by many people.

4. Bésame en Esta Esquina (Kiss Me in This Corner)

These square tiles along the boardwalk spell out “Kiss me in this corner.” Initially placed on a narrow street wall, this installation highlights the intimacy of small town corners and alleyways. It was later relocated after complaints about late-night visits from young lovers.

Why Rota’s Art Trail Matters

The Los Intervenciones scavenger hunt is more than just a fun way to spend an afternoon—it’s an opportunity to explore the cultural roots of Rota. Each installation connects the town’s ancient past with its modern identity, blending mythology, history, and local life in creative ways. It’s a reminder of how art can transform everyday spaces into something meaningful.

Other Art Installations on the Hunt:

5. Torre del Caracol (Snail Tower)

A tribute to the old Muslim tower, this piece symbolizes both the snail-shaped tower and the history of Rota. It’s located on Calle Extremadura.

6. Amantes Separados (Separated Lovers)

Inspired by a love story from Tarzan by Ignacio Martínez de Pisón, these clay figures represent a love that transcends time and space. The art reflects the real-life love between a local woman and an American soldier during the military base’s presence in Rota.

This story has sparked an annual competition of love letters in the town that are read in August.

7. Nadadores en las Azoteas (Rooftop Swimmers)

Three ceramic figures on rooftops represent Rota’s beach culture and its locals who often swim at odd hours of the day.

8. Bajaar (Casa Verde) (The Green House)

This installation honors Rota’s historic architecture and the origins of the Los Intervenciones movement. The house’s façade features a clay mold of the artist behind the movement.

This house represents the old houses of Rota, Although this house is very old there are others that are older. Above the house, there is a clay mold of the face of the individual who began the Intervenciones movement in Rota.

9. Rota Llena de Calabazas (Rota Full of Pumpkins)

This display of 19 ceramic pumpkins celebrates Rota’s agricultural history and the Mayetos, Rota’s farmers. The pumpkins, important for local cuisine and economy, can be found on rooftops, walls, and courtyards throughout the old town.

10. Puertas Abiertas (Open Doors)

Representing Rota’s international spirit, this installation symbolizes the town’s open doors to different cultures, races, and ethnicities—fueled by the towns history, the military base and tourism.

11. Dios Océano (God of the Ocean)

This mythical figure represents Oceanus, the Roman Titan and god of the ocean. The installation alludes to an ancient discovery—a rock depicting the ocean god, symbolizing Rota’s deep maritime history.

If you are interested in the Intervenciones group and would like to check out their youtube videos you can see them on facebook, here.

STREET PARKING IN SPAIN AND ITS MANY RAINBOW RULES

STREET PARKING AND ITS MANY RAINBOW RULES

For the sake of this blog, I’m going to focus on a variety of cities, not just Cádiz capital. Let’s decode the colorful parking rules across Spain—rules that can turn parking into a game of “Will I be towed or fined today?”

A Brief History of Parking in Cádiz

When I was growing up, paid parking was rare and exotic in the province of Cádiz. You parked wherever there was space. The only thing to avoid was a yellow line—a faint or patchy remnant of its last paint job—which meant “No Parking” or risk being towed.

Fast forward to today, parking has become even more stressful. Streets are painted in a rainbow of colors, each requiring you to decipher its meaning. To help navigate these changes, the Spanish government has set up websites like Zona Azul (in Spanish), explaining parking zones by city.

What Are the Different Zones?

Parking zones in Spain are organized by color, catering to non-residents, residents, short-term parking, and no-parking zones. The rules of each color may vary depending on the town.

White Zones

Free Parking

These are in high demand as they cost nothing.

Yellow Zones

No Parking

Avoid these zones, as parking here can lead to fines or towing.

Blue Zones

For Non-Residents

Time limits vary by city, typically 3-4 hours. Designed for visitors.

Green Zones

For Residents

Residents have no time limit. Non-residents may park here for 2 hours max, but it’s usually the most expensive option.

Orange Zones

Resident Priority

Found in areas with limited parking. Depending on the city, these may be for residents only or allow mixed use.

Blue and White Zones

High Turnover Areas

Found near government buildings. Maximum parking period: 45 minutes. These zones are more expensive than green zones.

Confused yet?! lol I got stuck with a few multas or fines before I learned my lesson and started looking up each zone for each town I was in.

Parking Apps: A Game Changer

Apps streamline the parking process. While each city often has its own app, they’re far more convenient than meters. Here are the top apps:

EASY PARK – For Jerez.

APPARKYA – For Rota.

TEPARK – For Cádiz.

I have found these 3 apps to be the most useful and easy to use. All that is required is your license plate and your credit card information and Voilá, hopefully you will never have to deal with the parking meter again.

If you are not sure of which app is appropriate the parking meter usually displays a sticker of the app needed for that area.

The ‘Gorrillas’: Informal Parking Attendants

We cannot talk about street parking without talking about Gorillas.

Who Are They?

These are usually men who ‘help’ you find a parking spot and expect a tip in return.

Do You Have to Pay Them?

No, unless the parking spot requires payment.

Should You Pay Them?

It’s up to you. A small tip (0.50-1 €) is customary if you’re feeling generous. I like to think of it as a tip for finding a parking spot and helping me park (Despite the fact I am completely capable of doing it on my own).

However, if you don’t have change or you don’t want to pay them, then don’t. It is a completely voluntary task that is up to you.

Many times I do not have change and I will tell them. ‘No tengo cambio’ and they will walk away.

Final Tips

Research parking rules before heading to a new city.

Download the appropriate app to save time.

Always check for parking signs and meters to avoid fines.

This summer, I was pleasantly surprised by the surge in tourism during the warmer months here in Cádiz. Intrigued by whether Spain experienced a similar influx of visitors, I delved into the tourist arrival statistics for 2022. Remarkably, Spain witnessed a staggering 106.2% increase in foreign tourists, with July alone hosting 9.07 million visitors.

Spain’s status as one of the preferred European holiday destinations among European travelers, as of September 2022, underscores its enduring appeal. If there were a tourism fashion show, Cádiz would undoubtedly be a hot ticket. Despite being a beloved summer spot for domestic tourists before COVID, the pandemic has elevated our region’s allure, attracting fashion-conscious travelers from around the globe.

When visiting a new place for the first time, people often rely on their preconceived notions. In today’s digital age, social media plays a significant role in shaping travelers’ perceptions. However, these platforms may not always accurately depict a destination’s true culture, often presenting an idealized version that isn’t entirely representative.

In this post, I aim to debunk five common travel misconceptions people harbor when visiting Spain and Cádiz for the first time, shedding light on the realities of travel experiences.

1. Sangría, the Drink Of The Spaniards

Misconceptions about Sangria

The last time I had sangria was on a girls’ trip to Barcelona with my mom and her friends in 2005 and boy did we get tipsy (aka drunk).

True sangria is basically wine with brandy or cognac, white soda, and lots of colorful fruit, oh, and to really top off the hangover, sugar.

Most Spaniards I know, have never tried sangria and probably never will or they make their own versions at home. This is why I consider Sangria to be misconception number 1. To be honest, sangría is a bit of a tourist trap, so the bars and restaurants can hike up the price.

A more typical drink down here in the south is:

Tinto de verano (summer wine) which is basically a mix of house red wine and soda (Fanta limón (Lemon) , Sprite or Casera)

Another tasty drink is called rebujito. Technically this drink used to only be served during feria time (our spring fair) but more and more you can find it on the menu.

Rebujito is fino (dry sherry wine) and Sprite.

To be blunt, drinking something like sangría in the summer heat is a bit strong. Sometimes it is best to go with something light so you to pace yourself through the long summer days.

2. Spicy Food In Spain?

Hehehe so this one always makes me smile. I hear more often than not

‘The Spanish don’t eat a lot of spicy food huh?!’.

The answer is no, no they do not.

At first, I used to be confused by this statement but then of course most people liken Spain to Mexico, where they eat a lot of spicy food.

Here we are just now discovering the flavor of hot spice and believe me I am very excited about it. I have spent my life trying to slowly “accustoming” (yes, I just used a Spanglish word – make used to/acostumbrar) my Spanish friends eating spicy food by adding a little chili spice to their meals whenever they come over for dinner.

Most Spanish people have no tolerance for it. We do however use other spices such as paprika, cayenne peppers, and garlic which have their own bite. And of course, chorizo has its own hot flavor.

3. Siestas, The Spanish Nap

One of Spain’s most defining activities in foreign eyes is the Siesta. That wonderful 30min to 1-hour rest people take after lunch. And yes, it is one of the most traditional activities of Spain but unfortunately, it is in decline.

The 21st century has not been kind to this healthy and truly necessary activity. From the 1950s to the 1980s many people moved from the rural area of the country to the cities. Due to a variety of political and economic reasons. The change from rural country life to city life meant a different work schedule, one which does not permit a midafternoon nap.

According to BBC only about 18% of the Spanish population still participates in this extra and much-needed sleep midday. Those who can’t during the work week take advantage of it during the weekends and in the summer months.

You all know I love my history, so here is a fun little tidbit for you all.

Where does the Siesta originate and why is it associated with Spain?

The idea of siestas was first introduced to Spain by the Romans. The Romans divided their days into 12 hours of light with the ‘sexta‘ Latin for the sixth, the hour after sunrise, dedicated to the hour of rest. The order of the Benedictus or the monks created a rule that the sixth hour would be the hour of rest, which was then brought into Spain. What was once known as ‘Guardar la sexta‘ translated into guardar la siesta (save the nap) and ‘sextear‘ turned into siestear, the verb form of Siesta or as we know it naptime.

This tradition of taking a nap during the hottest hour of the day worked well in Spain as the country primarily comprised of agriculture and fishing communities. There are still some traditional areas like Cádiz that follow the old school work day which is divided up into two working blocks 9 am-2 pm and 5 pm-9 pm with a 2 to 3-hour lunch break in between. This allows people to eat lunch and enjoy some zzz’s before going back to work.

The Spanish also use the Siesta as a way to catch up on some sleep as Spain has a later bedtime than the rest of Europe. So a little nap, at midday is much appreciated.

4. Public Transportation is Everywhere

Sevilla Train Station – Renfe

One thing I have realized while talking to people from outside Europe is that many people believe that there is cheap public transportation everywhere. Which is not necessarily true.

Fun fact: Spain is home to Europe’s most extensive high-speed rail network, with over 2500 km in service and many more under construction. These trains are running at speeds of up to 310 km/h. This is awesome if you are in a big city or traveling within the north. However, in the south, we are a little neglected (but hopefully not for long as new rails and new connections are being put in).

Now before anybody gets upset about my statement, it is true, in-between cities such as Madrid – Málaga or Madrid Sevilla or even Madrid – Cádiz the trains are typically fast and reliable (but definitely not cheap)!

(• side note the Renfe website, which is the train booking website, could use a little love, so please tread with patience. )

The dark lines represent the AVE trains (alta velocidad or fast trains)

The local transportation, from town to town inside Cádiz, however, is not doing so hot.

We, of course, have all of your typical local transportation, trains, busses, and ferries but they do not run all the time and like most public services can be excruciatingly slow.

This is why I always recommend either using Blabla car ( community-based travel network – kinda like a carpool) or renting a car if you are planning on visiting our lovely province. If you are planning on taking public transportation, take a Zen approach and be prepared not to be in a rush and to definitely have a little patience.

If you are planning on doing a trip around the province of Cádiz: Another fun idea is renting a caravan essentially a car/hotel in one, which helps when balancing the checkbook.

5. All We Have Are Beaches

Front side of Sierra Navada

When people think of Spain they tend to conjure images of sunny warm weather and beaches. Which is not wrong.

What most people do not realize is how diverse the Spanish landscape is. It boasts a little bit of everything from tall long mountain ranges to deep dark forests and arid deserts. We have it all.

Spain is completely surrounded by water with a few exceptions. It is bordered by France to the north as well as Andorra which is nestled between the two countries and of course Portugal to its west. Other than that, Spain has about 8,000km (4970.97 miles) of coastline. To top it off, we boast about 15% of the world’s blue flag beaches, which are mainly in Valencia and Andalucía.

This is why sunbathing is such a popular pass time. And yes, it is legal to be topless on our beaches.

*Blue Flag beaches: Basically it is a volunteer awards program that gives out a blue flag to beaches that meet certain standards. Such as, cleanliness and safety.

Mainland Spain and Portugal are known as the Iberian Peninsula and are surrounded by the Mediterranean to the east and the Atlantic to the west. We are technically the fourth-largest country in Europe and the second-largest in western Europe. If we really want to be cheeky about it we can claim to be the biggest country in Southern Europe.

Spain has several islands to its east and south which also have their own diverse landscapes and climates but we won’t get into that.

Spain is an extremely mountainous country. There are 8 major mountain ranges within the country (including the islands) although there are several smaller ‘sierras‘ (mountain ranges) as well. One of which is located to the north of Cádiz, la Sierra de Grazalema, El Torreon (1.654m.).

The mountain Mulhacén in Sierra Nevada (in Granada, Andalucía) is the highest peak in Western Europe outside of the Alps. It is also the third-most topographically prominent peak in Western Europe.

FORESTS

Although Spain is the 3rd most forested country in Europe, about 36.7% of its land is covered in forests. Spain has had a long and depressing history when it comes to its trees and forests. Deforestation has been a constant theme since the time before the Romans.

Pine trees over looking the beaches of Barbate

There is an old wives tale that dates back to the time of the greeks in the 1st century. It claims Spain had such a lush landscape a squirrel could cross from the south to the north of the country by jumping from one tree to another without ever touching the ground.

Every civilization that has stepped foot in Spain has played its part in cutting down the local trees. Wars and invasions along with cultivation were the first culprits. Then as the Christian empire was established, the trees of Spain were used mostly for, shipbuilding, agriculture, and mining. Now, Spain is attempting to reforest its land. Due to the rise of temperature in recent years, the peninsula is in danger of fires and desertification.

Fun Fact:

Spain has the largest cultivated forest in the world. Want to take a guess on what this forest is made of!

Olive trees! The olive grove in Andalucía is the largest in the world with over 1.5 million hectares and accounts for 30% of the global olive oil production according to the UNESCO world Heritage Conventions.

DESERTS

Europe’s only desert area is located in Andalucía Spain. It is called the Tabernas Desert and supports several animal and plant species that are rare in the world. It has actually become quite famous in recent years, as it is one of the locations for the filming of Game of Thrones. Due to its similarities to northern Mexico, many Hollywood westerns have also been filmed there. They even have three sets that resemble Wild West Towns you can visit in Almeria. Check out the link here.
